Sesshu
1420~1506?
He was the painter Zen monk. He perfected Suiboku-ga (水墨画: Indian-ink painting). At first, he studied painting under the painter monk, Syubun (周文). Later, he studied under Ouchi (大内). He went to China in 1467 and studied Chinese painting, including ancient Chinese painting, landscape painting , Kacho-ga (花鳥画: picture of flower and bird). After his retuning, was active in the Western districts of Japan. His major works are “Shiki-sansuizu”(四季山水図: four seasons landscape) and “”Amanohashidatezu” (天橋立図: Picture of the Heaven’s Bridge). Sessyu depicted Japanese beautiful landscape using the great skill of brush stroke and shading the ink.
