Sugai Baikan
1784~1844
He was a painter born in Sendai, Miyagi pref. He studied painting under a Nan-ga (南画:the South school of Chinese painting) painter, Jonan Nemoto (根本常南). Then he went to Edo (now Tokyo) and studied under Buncho Tani (谷文晁). Also, He went to Kyoto and Nagasaki pref. for study. In Nagasaki, he studied under Chinese painter, Kaho Koh (江稼圃). He returned home in 1830. He specialized in Bokubai (墨梅: a picture of Japanese plum using India ink).
