Torii Kiyonobu
1664~1729
He was an Ukiyo-e (浮世絵: woodblock prints) artist born in Osaka. He was a founder of Torii school. He moved to Edo (now Tokyo) with his father in 1687. His father was an actor of female roles. Kiyonobu depicted women with round dace and ample curves. Also, he drew “Yakusya-e” (役者絵: painting of actors). In Yakusya-e, he used the art of drawing, “Hyotan-ashi” (瓢箪足) and “Mimizu-gaki” (蚯蚓描) and he expressed the valiant actor with swollen muscle. Yakusya-e became the important subject of Ukiyo-e owing to Kiyonobu.. Torii-school had strong connection with Kabuki (歌舞伎) world and inherited by hereditary for 300 years.
