Iwasa Matabei

1578～1650
He was a painter. He painted attractive genre painting.He studied the brushwork of Tosa school and Kano school. Then he painted under the aegis of Matsuhira family in Fukui. After he moved to Edo, he belonged to no faction and active as an independent painter. Also, he is regarded as an eccentric painter because there is brutal and eccentric depiction in his scroll painting including “Yamanaka Tokiwa Monogatari Emaki” (山中常盤物語絵巻) and “Horie Monogatari Emaki” (堀江物語絵巻).
