Satake Syozan
1748~1785
He was the eldest son of the 7th domain head of Akita Domain, Yoshiharu Satake (佐竹義明). In 1758, he became the 8th domain head at a very young age. He studied the art of Western paining. He was a main person of Akita-ranga (秋田蘭画: a genre of Japanese painting). He wrote two books about Western painting, “画法網領” and “画図理解” in 1778. He painted Kacho-ga (花鳥画: flower and bird painting) and landscape painting with sensitive brushwork and beautiful colors.
