Shiba Kokan

1747～1818
He was a painter born in Edo (now Tokyo). He had an interact with Dutch scholar including Gennai Hiraga (平賀源内), Gentaku Ootsuki (大槻玄沢) and interested in Western painting. He produced chalcography and oil painting that settled on the subject matter of Japanese landscape and manner in foreign countries. Also, he wrote some books about world geography and astronomy. His major works are “三固景図” and “異国風景人物図”.
