Gessen
1741~1809
He was a painter born in Nagoya. He became a monk at the age of 16 and did ascetic training at Zojo-ji temple(増上寺) in Edo (now Tokyo). He was recognized his talent for painting and studied under Sekkan Sakurai (桜井雪館). In his twenties, he went to Kyoto and studied under Okyo Maruyama (円山応挙). Gessen became the temple master of Jakusho-ji (寂照寺) in 1774. He sold his works and made money to help poor people.
