Artist
Yamaoka Tesshu(1836-1888)
Although Tesshu studied the Daishi style in his youth, he is best known for his Zen-like style of calligraphy, in which he wrote in one fluid movement, using thick, meaty lines in stiff strokes.
It is said that he wrote as many as one million calligraphies during his lifetime to fund the construction of Toshogu Shrine and the reconstruction of temples.
