He was a Japanese-style painter born in Kyoto. He became an adopted son of Morihiro Yamamoto (山本守礼) and studied painting. Also, he studied under Okyo Maruyama (円山応挙). He was good at Kacho-ga (花鳥画: flower and bird painting) and portrait.
