He was the son of the doctor, Yuzan To (洞雄山) born in Nagasaki pref. He lost his father at the age 4. He left Nagasaki and traveled around Japan. In 1793, he became an adopted son of the tea master, Soha Katayama. His master is unknown but there is an information that he studied the technique of Chinese painter, Hi Kangen (費漢源). He drew unique and eccentric Chinese-style painting.
