He was born in Kagawa pref. He studied Chinese classics from his father. After he graduated from the University of Tokyo, he became a teacher. Also, he devoted to establish the Tokyo Fine Arts School with Tenshin Okakuta(岡倉天心),etc. He moved to Shanghai in 1903. He was in charge of editorial activities at publisher, Syomuinsyokan (商務印書館) for 10 years. After he came back to Japan, he lived in Kyoto. He interacted with famous academicians, artists, etc.
