He was a Kano school painter. He moved to Edo (now Tokyo) and became a shogunal painter. After four years, he was given mansion and founded Kajibashi Kano Family (鍛冶橋狩野家).His sons were given mansion too. Tanyu changed the previous style of Kano school.
