He was born in Aichi pref. He liked to draw since his youth. He studied painting under a Nan-ga (南画: the south school of Chinese painting )painter, Kyuzyo Yamada(山田宮常). When he was at the age of 15, he was taken in by a merchant, Tenyu Kamiya (神谷天遊). He left the house of Tenyu in 1795 and made a living by painter. He went to Kyoto and began painting in earnest. He specialized in landscape painting. He studied not only painting but Chinese classics and Japanese classical literature.
