He was a painter and calligrapher. He became a Zen monk at the age of 11. Then he served as a head monk at Syofuku-ji temple (聖福寺) for long time. He painted the droll Zen-ga (禅画). His works had great popularity. He had a rush on the painting so he declared he had put down his pen.
