He was a monk of Rinzai-sect (臨済宗) born in Gifu pref. He pilgrimed across the country with Gudo (愚堂) and Ungo (雲居).He founded Nansen-ji temple (南泉寺) in Edo when he was the age of 33. Later he back to Gifu.
