Kuroda Seiki
1866~1924
He was a Western-style painter. He went to French to study law, but he aimed to be a painter and studied under Raphael Collin. He acquired the touch of impressionistic oil painting. In 1893, after his returning, his nude had an impact and stirred debate, but his works were accepted gradually as the art befitting the new age. He attracted the young artists and established “Hakuba-kai” (白馬会) in 1896.Also, he became a professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and made effort in Western-style painting.
