He was a painter born in Edo (now Tokyo). His father was a poet, Rokkoku Tani (谷麓谷).He studied painting under Bunrei Kato (加藤文麗) and Gentai Watanabe (渡辺玄対).He became a retainer of Sadanobu Matsudaira (松平定信) in 1792. We can see a technique of Western-style painting from his work, “Koyotansho-zu”(公余探勝図). He drew this painting as record of geography. He established his own style in Kansei(寛政) era.
